World Press Photo Awards Days 2009

The prize-winners of the annual World Press Photo contest will present their work from all over the world. On Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 May the programme will kick off with individual presentations by prize-winning photographers. Among them is Anthony Suau, winner of the World Press Photo of the Year 2008. His winning image shows an armed officer of the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department moving through a home in Cleveland, Ohio, following eviction as a result of mortgage foreclosure.

On both days, lectures are scheduled later in the afternoon. The traditional Sem Presser Lecture (in cooperation with the Sem Presser Foundation), on Saturday, will be given by the American art and documentary photographer Nan Goldin. Breaking new ground in photography, Goldin was the first woman to use the medium to present the intimate details of her personal life as a public work of art, thus inspiring a new generation of artists. People who cannot attend the lecture will later be able to read it on: www.worldpressphoto.org

On Sunday, departing jury secretary Stephen Mayes presents what he describes as "a semi whimsical, semi serious personal reflection on what it's meant to me to be part of the jury process". Mayes will accompany his talk, entitled 470,214 Pictures Later, with a slide show of his diary snaps.
