Turkey votes. The political landscape after the local elections
On 29 March Turkey will hold local elections. This will be the first opportunity since the parliamentary elections of July 2007 for the Turkish population to make an electoral statement about the policy of the AKP.
Several themes, such as the position of the Kurds and growing conservatism in the public domain, are being played out as a prelude to the elections. At the same time, parties accuse each other during the campaign of the abuse of power, corruption, and the absence of women from the political arena.
Joost Lagendijk (Dutch Member of the European Parliament), Jessica Lutz (television correspondent Istanbul) and Kutsal Yesilkagit (University of Utrecht) will explain the result of the elections. The local elections serve as a reason to look at the political relations in Turkey. What are the consequences for the division of power and the negotiation process with the EU? Lily Sprangers (director Turkije Instituut) will chair the discussion.
