The Future of the Past
Humanity in Action organizes annual educational summer programmes on diversity, minority rights and human rights for students from Europe and the United States. This year HIA will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a conference on the question that lies at the very heart of its existence: How do we keep the memory of the Holocaust and World War II alive in a way that is useful for future generations?
The year 2010 will mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Europe. HIA The Netherlands intends this interactive international discussion night in Felix Meritis to trigger debates on what we should continue to celebrate and actively remember. What will happen when the liberation ‘retires'? This question is becoming increasingly relevant as the number of eyewitnesses that can share their experiences is shrinking.
Prominent guests such as Raoul Heertje, Ed van Thijn, Boris Dittrich and Piotr Cywinski (director Auschwitz museum) will discuss how to link the past to the present. The public will also be entertained by an artist of the spoken word and a musical performance.
