The Amsterdam Canon: Felix Meritis (1777)

On 18 February the Amsterdam television channel AT5 will broadcast a programme about Felix Meritis in the series The Amsterdam Canon. The Amsterdam Canon provides a survey of the history of Amsterdam in fifty episodes.

In the 23rd episode, Dutch historian Herman Beliën presents Felix Meriitis as a society that wanted to promote the arts and sciences. This was a popular activity in the time of the Enlightenment. In 1777 watchmaker Willem Writs and 39 sympathizers founded the Society of Merit, better known as Felix Meritis. The members carried out scientific research, debated various topics and talked about political ideals. The desire for a dangerous, new ideal called ‘democracy' was brewing. What influence did Felix Meritis have on Amsterdam life and what ideals have become a reality over the years?
