Press reporting on justice and injustice

Various media blow up public debates about the administration of justice. Miscarriages of justice and errors by the administration receive wide press coverage. This raises questions about how the media and the administration of justice in the Netherlands should relate to each other.
Are the media following the administration of justice in the Netherlands closely enough? Is the world of law dominated by something like an oyster culture? And if the media pay a lot of attention to mistakes on the part of officers, lawyers and judges, does this weaken the independence of the administration of justice? What role do the media see for themselves in 2009 when it comes to checking up on judicial power?

These and other questions will be debated by: Dick van Dijk (President Court of Justice Arnhem), Germ Kemper (Dean of the Amsterdam Bar Association), Harm Brouwer (chairman of the Board of Public Prosecutors), Stijn Franken (lawyer), Folkert Jensma (commentator Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad), Bas Haan (Dutch television programme Nova), Merel van Leeuwen (Dutch newspaper De Pers), Bert Huisjes (Dutch newspaper Telegraaf) and Gerben Kor (author of the book Medialisering van recht). Moderator: Ulco van de Pol (Municipal Ombudsman for Amsterdam and chairman Jacques van Veen Press Award Foundation).

This debate is organized as part of the Week of Justice by the Jacques van Veen Press Award Foundation in cooperation with Felix Meritis.
