Liberty City: The Great Freedom Contest

Sixty- five years have passed since the end of WW II. We have already been living in freedom for 65 years, but how do we live with this freedom?. What is the state of freedom nowadays? How free is Amsterdam in 2010? What are the limits of freedom and how do we maintain freedom in a city where we live with so many people?

The Great Freedom Contest invites everyone to come up with an answer to these questions: Well-known debaters, freedom fighters, artists and ideologists, as well as theatre, drinking, dancing and music. Anyone may say anything about freedom. The Great Freedom Contest is the yearly check-up on freedom in Amsterdam and we will persist until we have the answers!

The night starts with an interview with Job Cohen about his personal freedom experiences. One of the other guests is international opinion-maker and ‘New Amsterdammer' Russell Shorto (author of The Island in the Centre of the World and other works). He will defend the virtues of freedom. Several speakers and the audience will work on The Great Manifesto of Freedom. In the Arena-pit freedom fighters will argue freedom and ask themselves: What kind of freedom is most important, and what are its limits? During The Great Freedom Campaign Competition, artists, opinion-makers and journalists will compete for the best campaign idea. The night will conclude with The Party of Freedom with live bands and DJs from Amsterdam.

Organized by Amsterdams Bevrijdingsfestival, Club Interbellum and Felix Meritis.
