Israel 60 years
Israel will celebrate its 60th anniversary on 14 May 2008. In this context Felix Meritis and the Dutch television programme VPRO Tegenlicht will screen two documentaries: a portrait of writer Amos Oz in conversation with Chris Kijne made in 2007 and the première of The Colonist of Kibbutz Karmya (De kolonist van Kibboets Karmya). The screenings will be followed by a discussion.
The conversation between Chris Kijne and Amos Oz deals in particular with the soul of Israel. Oz is a master at using literature to point out the internal conflicts in Israel by means of exact psychological portraits. Moreover, as an essayist, journalist and activist he has always been a representative of the Peace Today movement. That makes him the perfect figure to explain how the soul of Israel has developed since the optimistic years of independence, via important turning points as the Six Day War until now.
The Colonist of Kibbutz Karmya is a portrait of how extreme right-wing colonists who had been expelled were forced to live with the native residents of a left-wing Zionist kibbutz. It is a documentary about the past and the expectations for the future in a divided Israel, a country that is preparing for the celebration of its 60th anniversary.
