George Weah: The Power of the Ball - The Role of Football in (West)African Politics
George Weah, a football star and World Player of the Year in 1995, used football as a means of peacekeeping in war-torn Liberia at the dawn of this century. As a presidential candidate for the next elections in Liberia, Weah (tbc) will discuss the role of football in political processes like peacekeeping, reconciliation, nation-building and international relations and cooperation in the West African region. Countries like Ivory Coast, Togo, Nigeria and Sierra Leone will also be discussed. Alongside Weah there will be several country and football and politics specialists present to stimulate an exciting debate. The World Cup 2010, which will kick off on 11 June in Johannesburg, will not remain untouched.
Other members of the panel besides Weah include: Frank van Eekeren (Utrecht University), Stephen Ellis (Centre of African Studies, Leiden), Simon Kuper (Financial Times, author of Football against the enemy) and Edwin Schoon (author of De Macht van de Bal). The presenter of this night is John van Vliet (presentor Sport-1 & KNVB TV).
Before the debate the first copy of the publication De Macht van de Bal (The Power of the Ball) will be presented to George Weah (tbc).
This programme is made possible by NCDO.
