Five questions to Jürgen Habermas

Jürgen Habermas, one of the last great living philosophers, recently celebrated his eightieth birthday. During the last decade he has presented himself as a sharp analyst of the world order after 9/11. The Divided West, especially compiled for the Netherlands, presents a selection of his most recent work. This book will be presented on 8 November.

In his recent work he focuses on what he calls the ‘post-secular' and ‘post-national' society. According to Habermas, we see both an increasing presence of religion in our democracy and an increasing pressure on the nation state from ongoing globalisation. Habermas answers the many questions that are raised by these developments in an incisive and individual way.

After the lecture Jürgen Habermas will answer questions put by Frits Bolkestein (former European commissioner), Job Cohen (Mayor of Amsterdam), Beate Rössler (Professor of Ethics and its history, University of Amsterdam), Paul Scheffer (Professor of Urban Geography, University of Amsterdam) and Désirée Verweij (Professor of Military Ethics at the Netherlands Defence Academy and Professor of Normative and policy dilemmas of multilateral peace operations at the Radboud University Nijmegen). Harry Kunneman (Professor of Social and Political Theory, University of Humanities) will give a short introduction to the work of Habermas and moderate the discussion after the lecture.
